It does seem right though I think a little more practice before I weld on the pipe to the slider to make sure it's good and strong AND looks pretty.

Cheers
Steve

BTW do plenty of practice on the tbe bufre you start - I found it much harder to mainatin the correct rod position compared to doing RHS or flat bar.

Dad and I picked up a new Cigweld 200 mig welder and started playing with it last weekend. I found a good way to test how good your actual welds are, is to weld a piece of steel, break it apart (which gets harder the better you get) and look at how much penetration you're getting.

There's a difference between a good looking weld and a strong weld.

btw Steve if you're having difficulty with new rods, just hold the actual rod instead of the handle. You'll get more control that way.

Yup, I used to do a practice weld and then grab the grinder and cut through it and have a look, that's if it wasn't flat stock where I could just look at the back for signs of plenty of heat/penetration. I'm confident enough now to do welds that wont break so dont bother anymore. Now the steel bends rather than the weld busting

Like the idea of holding the rod rather than the handle, I'll give that a go

Cheers
Steve

Is holding the rod a good idea?
If you're holding the rod - but haven't arc'ed yet you would want to earth yourself accidnetally......
It might make it more stable - but no thanks.....
