Default 17 inch rims down to 16 inch?

Hi guys,

Ive got a 2010 KK.

My tyre guy reckons that I need to change rims down from the current 17 inch to 16 inch in order to get a really good 4wd tyres.

It's a fairly expensive exercise. But I do live in the Kimberley in WA so there's heaps of off roading.

Has anyone else done this or got any thoughts about it? The tyre guy is pretty friendly but he does have some self interest in selling me more stuff

Cheers.

Probably more choice in 16" but most of the patterns should be available or something close. There are a lot of 4wd tire options out there now for 17" - you may not get exactly the same size you have but you are allowed some variation from the tire sticker on your vehicle. Some problems you may face like many of us Grand Cherokee owners are the brake caliper housing or rotor diameter may be too large to down size. Hopefully that wont be an issue for your Cherokee?

With a 2010 you'll fit 16" rims, not sure about in the Kimberly but generally more options equals better price.

Second hand wheels should be pretty cheap.

Looks like the KK came with 16" 17" and 18" options so probably you can drop down. Check your tire sticker and your state website for allowable vehicle modifications and from there you can work out what options you can look at.

KK Jets also had 20 inch rims.

Keep in mind that Toyota Prado/Land Cruisers mostly have 17 inch rims. So I can't see having supply issues with tyre for 17 inch rims. Me thinks your dealer needs to do a rethink.

regards

Correct me if I am wrong but surely a land cruiser uses a bigger diameter tyre.

There is no doubt more choice and better pricing with a 16 inch tyre.
