Default Engineering a cj8 scrambler

G'day, I took my CJ8 to get a engineer certificate yesterday & I have to get some small items sorted which is OK but he is concerned about the tyres & suspension as he cant find the original specs & their options. I have 31" tyres & the shackles are 6-1/2" (165mm) between the pin centres. He says the shackles are not permitted unless they were a original option, the tyres need to be within 2" of original size or option & the wheel track must be within 1" of original, I have a rear wheel track of 1450mm tyre centre to tyre centre. My main question is as a engineer doesn't he do tests to approve the above as I get the impression that he is indicating they may need to be removed which I don't want to do. The report is for NSW & the Jeep is a 1982 Scrambler, 258 original motor & 5 speed box. The main reason for the report is because it has been converted from LHD to RHD which he is happy to sign off on that part. Anyone know where to obtain the original specs & input as I have not done this engineering stuff before but am 99% positive people on here have engineered their vehicles for bigger tyres than what I have. Thanks Darren

The engineer is right. He can't go more than what is allowed.

Shackles are way to long and you can't have longer than stock ones at all. Get some new ones that don't look so out of place. The tyres are fine as pretty sure cj came with 29" tyres stock, so that's your lift used up there.

Why does it need engineering it sounds stock apart from your shackles and tyre? You only engineer if you change something and I know vic does not let you change shackle length at all but everyone does it just don't go to crazy. Does it wonder in the steering with the longer shackles as your castor will be out.

If he is only engineering the left to right conversion then everything else will need to meet regs, however it is possible to engineer "any" modification but this may require expensive testing for certification.

Cheers

Shafus the main reason for the certification is the RHD conversion, the part that sucks the most is that the Jeep had been previously engineered & registered in NSW the RMS can tell me the previous rego number, engineer report number & who done it BUT I don't have a copy to show them so it must be done again. The shackles do look too long but I haven't driven the vehicle to be able to comment on the handling as it is unregistered & this is how I bought it. The engineer said to get extended spring hangers to make up for the loss of height from the shackle removal to prevent the tyres rubbing if they can stay. Not having access to the original specs is not helping to decide whats legal & whats not. I am planning to take it to the Classic not Plastic at Nabiac this weekend as I am sure I'll get some good leads & info there. Thanks for the replies it all helps. Regards Darren

The cold a flu tablets I am on made me miss the rhd part for the engineer. Shackles that height will have your steering pretty twichy. I don't know what extended spring hangers are ( sound like shackles to me). I would think it would go easy thought engineering seen no lift or crazy big tyres and 31 should not rub. Would love to see some pics and I would love to go to classic not plastic but it's a bloody long drive drive from vic in my cj7.
