Too easy, do yourself a favour and wear steelcaps if you’ve got them, or at the very least strong enclosed shoes, it may make a difference.

Not sure if will help but the first comment on this page suggests changing out the transfer case fluid to get rid of a clunk on takeoff. Maybe worth a try

Bit of an update....
Clunk still there - on the road, with or without camper. Did a 4WD towing course on the weekend. Did not hear it at all in low range.
Went for a drive with local workshop when we got back and the clunk did its thing. It sounded to both of us like it was around rear diff/suspension.
Mechanic put up on the hoist and used a pry bar to try and find something to move that shouldn’t. Worked all around rear but everything seemed okay. Working forward got to transmission and they could lift it probably 50mm !
Called me later that day, transmission mount had 3 cracks in it. Ordered a new one and they are in stock in Melbourne. 10 DAYS DELIVERY - TO SYDNEY ! Seriously? Hate to think what it would be to Darwin or Perth.
Put it all back together, and also fitted Chief Products transmission protection plate for our trip. Hasn’t made a clunk since so looks like we’re on the right track. Will update after new mount fitted and taken the camper away
Thanks all for the suggestions. The list was handy when talking to the workshop👍👍👍👍👍

Great result.
You've now reminded me of a similar thing in a Territory I had some time back, you'd swear the noise was from a problem in the rear suspension, but not so, in fact both the trans mount and the centre drive shaft bearing were buggered! The shaft is a bit of a ventriloquist, able to throw a noise or vibration way past its source.

When I was quoted three weeks for parts that was in Melbourne I questioned him on why it takes so long as I could ride a pushbike to Melbourne and back from Mackay in less than three weeks, his reply was they only order parts on Tuesdays so if you go in on Wednesday nothing happens until next Tuesday and two weeks delivery. Simply not good enough in this day and age thats why I deal direct from the States and have it here in anywhere from 4 days to 10 days on my doorstep.

Order directly from RockAuto and it’ll be delivered to your doorstep on average around 7 days, sometimes as short as 4.
