CRD getting 12.5 to 13 running to work and back with my current setup. Take the roof rack off and I save 1L.
Can get down to 11 on long trips using cruse.
But I have changed my diff ratios to 3.73 from 3.55.

I haven't had my Hemi very long (2 months) but have already done a couple of trips.

With a double swag and awning on the roof, plus fully loaded rear, fridge, chainsaw, tools, camping gear, etc etc... (2.84t over the weigh bridge).

Running 32" muddies.

I so far have an average of 22L/100km (calculated using true distance traveled from GPS).

This includes everything from, daily city driving taking me to work, long freeway cruising and of course plenty of low range on our way through the high country.

On the highway if I am super baby like and keep it cruising on MDS then I managed to get down to about 14L/100km that's the best I have seen. And that was with an empty car and stock highway tyres.

The worst I got was 37L/100km on a leg between Orbost and Tom Groggin. Via the Deddick, Davies Plain, etc.

As they say, smiles per gallon is what it's all about. [emoji39]

Over ~6 years my hemi has been pretty consistent around 13-17L/100KM on road (including dirt roads I mean.) in high range.
13L/100KM is about the best it'll do cruising on freeway, and 16-17L/100KM for running errands around and trips on the back roads.
Similar setup to Brad Jones, fully loaded boot, stuff on the roof, 32" muddies and some armour.

Think I was getting ~400-500km from the stock tank from memory. I installed the LRA AUX tank early so not sure. Get around 1000-1200KM with both tanks (around 160L) on the trips we do.

Hard to know the real pros and cons without owning both. But seems like you can't go wrong either way.
Personally I'm not a fan of diesel passenger cars; annoying (for me) to maintain and terrible emissions.
That said I originally looked at CRDs coz I wanted the bit extra fuel range, but decided to go with the hemi when a deal came up, and I drove one and found the AUX tank existed.

Not worth trying to compare long-term cost, it probably balances out in the wash. Lower fuel cost but higher maintenance on the CRD, etc.
So I recon it just comes down to whether you prefer petrol or diesel

5.7 hemi over here too

Best thing I did for fuel consumption was installing the Flashpaq tuner and running the tune that's equivalent to our 95 fuel. I have recalibrated the transmission to the larger tyres too.

On long drives with 33 ATs, roof cage with wind deflector, 3 inch lift at 110km/hr I can get in the 11L/100km range.

Sitting at 80kms/hr it gets even better!!

If you factor in the price of diesel in parts of Aus being 40c/L more expensive to buy, the petrol looks an appealing option to me. To fill my tank is $70-$80 and the diesel would be over $100

Glade I don't live in your area Slippery, Diesel is $1.39 and 95 is $1.37 here.
