I have a 2016 JKU 3.6L auto and it has not missed a beat since New. It is powerful and reliable. The engine is unfussed.
It likes the open road, a good long distance car, and fairly quiet with the hard top.
Mine came with the Uconnect and sidesteps. It has the 4 airbags which is the package I wanted. It has street presence and is a highly capable offroader.
I will start modding after the 3 yr warranty expires. Pioneer rack, UHF radio, and definitely LED lights. The only mod I have made so far is a factory reversing camera. IMHO it is a must.
I have been very happy with it. It's a keeper.
My other ride is a 1995 XJ 4.0L which I have had since New for 24 years. Both cars are built well and each has its own advantages over the other. I recently did a 5,000 km round trip with the XJ into northern outback South Australia, and it performed beyond my expectations for a 24 yo car. Is it possible to mechanically break this car?
As capable as they are, I never saw 1 (one) JK Wrangler on the trails in the 3 weeks I was on them or the three caravan parks we stayed in (Broken Hill, Port Augusta, Coober Pedy). It would appear that they either do off-road duty closer to home (urban areas), or never leave the blacktop. By contrast, the Toyota LC 70 series are over-represented out there, which is understandable given the dealer network in every town supporting the mines, Government agencies, NGOs, and hundreds of grey nomads hauling their luxury caravans.
