Coils generally play up when hot.

Interesting, I didn't know that. My personal experience is mostly on European cars with coil on plug setups and generally speaking, those kinds of coils either just work or they don't, but when they do act up it's never been temperature related. Interesting to know either way, will have a new coil this Friday and will see what happens after I swap that.

Thank you for the input!

your '95 oem coil looks different to anything that you can get aftermarket. it should also have the jeep part number on it somwhere.
Interestingly the best price i could get for a replacement coil, outside of ebay(just don't) was the dealership about $75.

That's good to know, I hadn't priced the dealer yet. At a glance the cheapest one I spied was from 4x4point at $63 I think (although I'm skeptical about buying things from them, every time I get parts there one or two things just have something wrong or off about them, it's odd).

I'll call in to my local dealer tomorrow and see what they can offer, they're pretty cool lately so you never know. I'd like to be OEM if feasible with electrical parts, it's the same as with the BMW's I own / work with - never touch anything electrical that's aftermarket, it's nothing but pain.

Cheers

Yeah heaps, used to have many an issue with the COP (coil on plug) on my BA falcon, especially at running temps. $40 a coil x6 so was fun figuring out which was dead....

Have you tried Jeeppart at Hervey Bay? I've always had good service from them.

That's really interesting, I guess I just need more experience with coil failures! (oh god no). I have BF Falcon too actually, LPG. It was a free car that my brother let me have after he neglected the hell out of it and one day it just wouldn't start. It's the only car I've owned that I ebay'd a bunch of parts on (coils & o2 sensor) but hey 30k kms later and it still starts first go, runs like a dream and never backfires. Wonderfully reliable beater that is.

Been quite a few years since I used Jeeppart! But they were fantastic to us, couldn't agree more. I always found that their prices were a bit on the crazy side though, even for non-genuine parts... When my crankshaft sensor failed, they were the first guys I called, very helpful but almost $200 for the sensor. Went to the dealer and got an OEM sensor for $85. Same thing with some suspension components. Love the guys but just too much $$$

I always found it funny, I can hop online and within minutes find OEM parts for my 7 series that are incredibly reasonably priced and in abundance. But I've always struggled to find a consistent source of reasonably priced parts for the old XJ, in spite of it being such a common, popular vehicle (and my 7 being an aging european barge with a dwindling owner base). With the XJ, I'm always searching and searching and buying one thing from here and two things from there, it's weird. I haven't tried Rockauto yet though, the prices there even on good branded parts look so CHEAP, are they really a reliable vendor? I could get everything I need to practically restore this XJ for just over $1,000 with shipping, which seems crazy cheap to me haha
