Default CRD fuel smell. Help

I'm chasing a raw fuel smell, and it's got me buggered.

I have checked out the filter, and have replaced it and new seals. New hoses to and from filter too. All dry under the hood.

I get the smell only when I pull up at a stop, and not when travelling. It causes me to need the recirc on in suburbia. Very annoying.

Today I was under the Jeep and checked out the lines to and from the tank, as well as the filler and breather. There was no obvious seepage anywhere I could see.

It's got me baffled. Any ideas? I'm getting this thing ready for a FNQ trip in winter and I want it right.

Cheers,

Robert

Check out my Ride(s)
Default Fuel Smell

Diesel is a bugger of a fuel to track.
It lubricating properties mean it can seep everywhere and
soak into places we'd never think of.
Umpteen tiny return hoses from injectors,
Connections between return hoses in the V,
Flexible hoses from firewall to engine,
The hoses from the tank are a harder plastic,
Any dirt will visually mask a small leak too.

Best of luck and if you're going through Townsville,
give me a hoy

Thanks mate.

You'll no doubt smell me when I blow through town!

I've been reading on the USA forums about copper washers in the injectors and o rings in the injector return lines. If I get motivated tomorrow I'll whip the cover off and have a look.

It seems to be hard to start after a few days sitting, which is a symptom the guys refer to in the above.

Cheers,

Robert

Check under your high pressure CRD pump ... they tend to leak only when the engine is running.

Hi Robert curious as to if you solved this? I get a faint fume smell in the cabin at the lights also, have recirced before as a result. I do experience the difficulty starting after a few days sitting you mentioned as well.

Yes, all sorted.

Was leaking fuel lines to and from the pump. I sorted it before our FNQ trip, then did 7500km without smelling it again.

Wish I could sat the same about the hard cold starting. I think I have got the wrong glow plugs in. I found out recently there are 2 different voltages available.
