Hi, im looking at giving my 2015 unlimited rubicon a lift and was originally looking at 2.5" but im a bit unsure now after reading through the thread.

Is there any issues with a 2.5" lift in nsw, rego / insurance wise? Would i need to get an engineering cert? Im going to be doing the install myself.

Would i be better off just going 2"?

Cheers

Its 50mm total lift before needing an engineer's report in NSW. This includes lift from tyres, springs and body lift (if used).
Go from 31.5" stock tyres to 33", and thats a lift of 0.75" (19mm), leaving a spring lift of 31mm (1.2").
Of course, this is to be completely within the rules.
So, you realistically could use 33" tyres and a 2" lift and probably never get picked on it.

If you're in Sydney, you could go to Ultimate Suspension in Ingleburn and get a custom height lift set to a total of 50mm after you've added all your other accessories (bar work, winch, roof rack etc). I had mine done by them and have been happy with the result...it was just what I wanted.

Ok so im a complete noob here so feel free to have a giggle...

If i install a kit myself is it possible to get an engineering cert. Or do they have to do it themselves to certify it?

The engineers need to review it and test each individual case. Unless you are an automotive engineer yourself, and then we have a paradox where the timeline implodes upon itself, ending all life.. Or something like that.

So does that mean all 4x4 lift installers have engineers on payroll to certify?

Like i said, complete noob. But i have been in love with off roading since early teens. Anyone in newcastle / hunter area is more than welcome to say hi / teach me... lol

The finished vehicle needs to be inspected and carry out braking and swerve tests for a final report...you can do the work, but an RMS recognised engineer has to do the report/assessment.
Best off getting a list of recognised engineers from the RMS, then calling around to find out who will do it and what they require/expect and talk with them about how you're going to accomplish the lift.
The taller you lift, the more complicated the engineering to do it, and the more difficult it is to meet the expectations of the engineer/RMS.
Unless you have a real need for a large amount of ground clearance, or a large break over angle, I'd personally stick fairly close to the 50mm rule....
