Default Tyre Choice for KK Limited

Hi,

My first post here. I have a 2008 KK Limited with the 18in rims and Eagle RSA's 235 60 18.

Prior to this I was a Wrangler man (owned two - lift kits, diff locks, ARB bar with Bridgey Desert Duellers), and before that I rebuilt a 68 CJ7 chassis up - I miss that beast and those days I'm a family man now hence the KK Limited........)

Time has come to look at new tyres and I am dismayed by the lack of choice. I was told by my tyre mate that Jeep make a narrower rim than most - 7 inches. Therefore the choice is a bit 'limited' (pardon the pun). It was suggested probably one of the better choices is a set of Pirelli Scorpions - but they will be the fattest tyre I can fit on these rims.

I don't want to change rims (did I mention I was a family man....??) and was wondering if anyone else has changed tyres on a Limited, and if so what to? What were your results?

I mainly do sand driving at the moment - the little fella a bit too young to go hard 4WD-ing.

Interested in people's thought's / suggestions.

Cheers

I'd be interested to hear the results on this. I'm in the same boat.

When picking up my KK last year I got the dealer to switch over the standard eagles to the Pirelli Scorpions as I knew that I was going to Fraser Island with the KK in the first month. In a range that is extremely limited these are a great choice. I have just clocked over 20,000km and they still look almost new. The tread is chunckier than the road tyres, but due to the 18inch rim they are still a lower profile. So you will have to keep in mind that you will not be able to lower down the tire pressure like you can on a tyre that has a higher side wall. At cold I was only game to go down to 24 - 25 psi on them where as the others I was there with were down to 18 psi. If you check out the reviews on the Pirelli's I think you will be hard to find anything negative. I just wish we could fit something a bit wider as I didn't want to have to move away from the stock rims either. But the tyres will look a little small if I can get a lift for the KK.

Here's a KK LTD with 18's I did for a Dealership up here in Brisbane last week.
We were going to do a trade in and upgrade the tyres to a slightly bigger size with ATR pattern but there's not really anything that suits. I'll be doing some more investigation next week but at the moment we're thinking of swapping the 18's onto a Sport and putting the 16"s on the lifted LTD to open up tyre choice.

how much room is under the guards ?

i have not had a kk through the shop yet but general grabbers come in 18inch sizes like 255/55/18 , 255/60/18 ,285/60/18 , 275/65/18 etc so may pay to look into it . i have been fitting these to discos and range rovers for a while now and havegot a lot of good reports
back from customers .

Thanks createit. I've done Fraser previously in one of my Wranglers - GREAT FUN! How did the KK perform, particularly on some of the inland tracks that get cut up by the tourist buses? How was clearance?

Your feedback on deflation is good. I was wondering about that, since I understand the Pirelli's top be a wide tyre. I do pressure down when I go offroad and have an on-board compressor under the hood.

Finally, how was road noise with the Pirelli's?

Cheers
