Just thought add add my heep into the mix as it pings on 91ron but runs sweet as on 95ron. 98ron runs pretty much the same as 95ron so the extra expense isn't worth it.

Further info to my previous comments about being told that all 91 fuel will have ethanol by the end of the year -

Was just told by one of the local servos (when I questioned them not having any ethonal mixes) that the push to replace standard 91RON unleaded with 10% ethanol blend has been removed due to the complaints received (complaints from whom I have no idea since most people didnt seem to know about it!)

Complaints stopping a government programme? Unless it is a state one & well we do have an election next month...

I suspect it is federal, but then, they wouldn't advertise dropping it as it would lose them some of their remaining 'green' cred, I guess.

Was reading on on of the US forums that pinging can be stopped on oil burning motors by using upper cylinder cleaners (the ones you pour in the plug holes & leave for a while to sink in). Seems the build-up of carbon deposits on the piston tops and combustion chambers from all the burnt oil effectively raises the compression ratio and causes the low octane fuel to prematurely detonate (high octane fuel is more stable & thus less prone to do this).

Mine doesn't use any oil between changes & has pinged on low octane unleaded from the day I drove it off the lot so I don't think the above is the issue with me but if your motor's using oil it may be worth a shot. Also on the issue of faulty knock sensors, apparantly the PCM doesn't start retarding timing to stop this pre-detonation until the engine hits 2000RPM which is why most of us notice it rattling and pinging when we floor the accelerator in a higher gear at like 1200RPM and notice it usually goes away above the magic 2000RPM mark, so the knock sensor is still working but it's inputs are just being ignored by the PCM programming at lower RPMs.

I put 2 bottles of Caltex Techron5000 with a tank of caltex 95 just before the last major service. I am running 91ULP again, and the ping is pretty much gone.

I tried as suggested as above and its early days so far, however its running back on 91 and I couldnt hear the pinging. That said I will keep a listen on and report if it changes.

EDIT: I spoke too soon.. however it doesnt seem as bad as I remember it to be.
