Default Fuel Cap PAIN-IN-THE-ARSE

On my way to the beach on thursday, i thought i'd do as most people do when their gas tank is nearing the E and i'd fill up. Problem is, just as i was about to get onto the barge i was going to fuel up but alas, the TJ's fuel cap would not open. I played with it for 30 mins before giving up and calling the Customer Care Centre. She says "Take it to your nearest dealer"

BULLSHIT! I got less than a 1/4 tank and i gotta drive 2.5 hrs south!?!? No-way. So she sends a guy out while i wait and wait...while i wait i still fiddle and bingo it pops open. So i call her back and tell her not to worry. I fill up and the fuel cap opens and closes normally all weekend (i went thru $150 in fuel in 3 days over 700 klms. I do too many crop circles... :D ;) ) I get home today with less than a 1/4 tank and hey? It won't open.

Insert key, turn 1/4 clockwise, turn cap counter clockwise and should open. However i insert key turn and then turn the cap and the cap just freewheels. Dealer will have a replacement in a few days, i hope.

Any of you guys experience this sort of problem with the wrangler fuel cap? Cap is as the wrangler is, 3 months old and not beaten around.

very common problem. You gotta hate standing there at a packed petrol station fumbling with the cap for 20 minutes!

try turning the key a quarter of the way and then turning both the cap and the key at the same time.

I found the cap will freewheel if the key is not quite engaged properly - even if it is only a few mm.

good luck....

LOL just after I bought my TJ I left the fuel key (WTF there's a different key for fuel ) at home - running waaaay long on petrol....last resort, BFScrewdriver and poped the plastic lock top off and just unscrewed it.

The lock is soooo weak it would barely deter an honest petrol thief.....

Anyways it took nearly a year for me to go to the dealer and buy a new cap

I've already called the dealer and he said he'll get a new cap for me. I've managed to get it open and put some gas in but i can tell you if it continues with a new cap i'll get an aftermarket job. If i pull hard as i turn the key and cap it seems to open after only 5 mins of trying...

Lost my cap ages ago but found one on the road in front of a service station, so any of the screw - in caps fit, should be able to get one from a wreckers for nothing, don't worry about a key.
