2.7 diesel model have the cv in the rear drive shaft, on the transfer case end and a uni joint on the diff end.

And here is the fun part. European model 1999-2001 with 3.1td has cv in the rear and front of driveshaft

I don't know is there WJ 3.1td there in Australia? I am from Finland here we have those 1999-2001. Then came 2.7 diesel with MB engine.

3.1 td is same motor that XJ 2.5td but 3.1 have 5 cylinders.

I must apologise. I just stuck my head under my 2.7 and the rear drive shaft has a CV joint at the front.

Did we ever track down a part number for the CV on the rear driveshaft? Mine has started to leave an oil mark under the floor, so I'd like to get the ducks lined up for a replacement soon.

Are you confident it's the CV joint leaking and not the transfer case rear output seal?

I'm only asking as upon opening up a front CV I could only find heavy grease there, and seems unlikely it will drip.
Rockauto has it but they want $185.
Speaking to my mechanic friend which recommended switching to a double cardan front driveshaft, he said he hasn't seen any bad rear CVs but plenty of front ones. Of course this statistic applies to stock height WG's, we don't have many lifted WG's here.

You have me thinking now! I'll have to re-check. It's only a dark stain under the floor that lines up with the CV joint.
