Been there, done that. Ended up replacing the filter.
An old filter can cause problems due to restricting flow and increasing vacuum(?) in the line to the low-pressure pump, which can then overcome a tired o-ring and suck in air.
Had a similar situation: a lady parked her A170CDI (same fuel system) in front of the office where I work, ran some errands and couldn't start when she returned. We filled the fuel filter so that the engine could start, theorizing that the low-pressure pump has more oomph at idle than when cranking and it will overcome the restriction of a clogged fuel filter. It got her out of the field of view, so I suspect it worked.

The filter is only a month or so old, but I have been caught by bad fuel before. Had a dose of water last time.

Had to manually prime it this morning, but I think I know where the air leak is - at the LP pump inlet connection. If I pushed on it I could hear it suck air.

I'll know for sure tomorrow, but I think I might have it picked. I've bypassed the fuel warming valve with some 5/16 hose.
Since then, I had the bleed screw on top of the filter loosened to the extent that the line to the LP pump looked full of air with just a trickle of fuel in it. It just kept idling as if nothing was wrong.

Hard to start again today. However, my new fuel line arrived so I was brave enough to pull out the old. Note the oring. Anyone agree that it looks very much like a problem? (Ignore the broken clip. I did that removing it which is why I waited for the new one before touching it.)
Tomorrow morning I'll find out if it was THE problem.

I'd say it's the problem, looks a tab flat to me.
O-rings are the biggest fuel issues these engines have.

A "tad" flat? As far as understatements go that's right up there with Monty Python's black knight, "It's only a flesh wound"
It was also hard.
Edit: I have a set of orings on order to carry under the back seat. My concern here is that the old clips break as soon as you touch them. The only original line remaining is from the back of the fuel rail to the HP pump. Perhaps I should just replace it.
What's that one do, anyhow? Is that the pressure control valve return?
