Have to agree re the Landrover. My mates that have Jeeps haven't had any problems, and I didn't have any problems with the Defer either. I paid $16000 for the TD5 Defer and sold it 18 months later for $22000. Had to turn away angry buyers as it sold in 20 minutes after I posted it on line. I even had one guy begging me saying he would deposit $5000 into my account tonight and be on a plane in the morning from Adelaide. It was a good one, but it was still just a landrover (I could only say that on a Jeep forum - TBH it was a great unit, just not right for me). Only car I've ever made a profit on too.
I think the Wrangler would suit your needs pretty well for what you've said. I wouldn't be worried at all about reliability issues. Just take one for a drive and sus out the interior to see if it has the room you're after. Just be aware, if you drive one, you'll probably buy it! They do drive very well on the road and no comparison to the 80 series - it will feel like a bus.

Hey and thanks
I don't mind a 4x4 feeling truck like. I personally like the interior of the 2010 model more than the updated 2011. Looks more four wheel drive like. Probably why I like the diesel as well, it sounds like a tractor and to me that sounds how a 4x4 should sound.
No DPF etc to worry about either in the 2010.
Other than that... I tried to speak to some defender people... lol.
1: Someone got killed on a wet road driving a wrangler. I would never get in one.
2: In stock form the Defender is WAY more capable than a wrangler, even more capable than a rubicon. Apparently suspension geometry in a wrangler is not as good... ?
3: Defenders only need 33" tires. You do not get bigger wheels than that if you are touring the country.
4: Any bigger than 33" is no good for long distance (never understood why, larger wheel means less turns necessary to travel the same distance, which should equate to better economy not worse... given it is heavier though... it should be the same, not worse)
5: Defenders with long range tanks fit 200+ litres of fuel. Wrangler with long range tank = 140 litres. --- Do you really need more than 140? That is enough to go from Sydney to Bundaberg, I can't imagine not finding a fuel station over half a continent. - Oh... they said they get like 10L per 100km with the TD5 defender. So at that rate with 200 Litres... thats 2000km on 1 tank of fuel. Whats the wrangler like on the TD and can it be improved?

There's a reason the Defender has a better range than a Wrangler. It's only 90kW compared to 147Kw. Plus there is a lot more room to fit a larger long range tank on a Landrover
The Perentie Defender (ex Australian Army version) is more capable than a stock Wrangler but having driven a Defender (which I loved), I honestly believe the a stock Wrangler is a better vehicle both off road and on.

There are a few YouTube videos on the Defender v Rubicon.
The Rubicon is the winner off road because of its suspension articulation and wider track.
The Defender is the winner for storage and distance between fuel stops.
Me personally...... I bought my Rubicon for its off road ability and ease of finding after market add ons, definitely not the fuel economy.
Cheers, Craig

You increase the friction and the rotational mass, you're going to feel it in economy and driveability. I don't really understand what they mean by Defenders only need 33s though, in my opinion that sounds more like a maximum due to powerplant limitations, but I feel like the same goes for the JK anyway. I'm in the petrol and would not give up any more power for more rubber, 33s so far have got me everywhere I've needed to go and i reckon there's more efficient places to spend the money.
