Default Faulty Clutch Fan/radiator

Having read the numerous issues with XJ overheating I noted the drip of coolant coming from the water pump and replaced it, the thermostat, coolant and hoses and got it flushed.

Took it for a boat tow and it overheated after 60 km in 28C day. I'm thinking that as this was hwy speeds towing (90kmh) the radiator may need to be removed end tanks off and cleaned properly. In the interim can I "lock up" the clutch fan so it is on 100% from startup? Can you glue or jam these on? I'm not 100% sure it is working properly as there is little difference in resistance when I turn this by hand when cold or after running hot after towing? Should I be able to feel a noticable difference by hand? I plan to replace this with a elec fan anyway soon?

Thoughts about the clutch fan or just run with the radiator overhaul?

Cheers Scott

It sounds like the fan is faulty, I have a couple of different clutch units here if you want to compare them to yours....

Kinda defeats the whole benefit if having a clutch fan though plus I am pretty sure it is a cast alloy so good luck trying to weld that...

If its overheating at 90kmph, fixing the fan wont make a difference.
Driving at that speed, more air flow is provided than a fan would ever give.

Little resistance of the fan when hot does normally mean its gone, but you will have other problems with your cooling system beside the fan.

My problem was the clutch fan. It sound exactly like a problem I had with my last 4x4. The radiator still flows but I took the radiator out and got the ends/ top & bottom cut off and a Full clean out and respray. Never went over 1/4 temp again.

Smile Goes in tomorrow

Thanks guys for the feedback.

It reinforced what I have read and thought.
I believe the radiator is part blocked / 14 yo and the clutch fan is tired or stuffed.

Goes in tomorrow for new all metal radiator and install of 16in 2800 cfm low profile thermo fan to replace clutch fan.

Hopefully this fixes the problem as I'm going to North Straddie on the weekend to to test it out on the sand.

Cheers Scott
