the more I play with my transmission the more I'm thinking that the temp should be removed at the pan, The flow is 3 litres a minute through the cooler. misting the cooler will not cope with a transmission at operating temp and then a spike due to a high stall or high converter slip.
I have started modifing my pan. I will be extending about 50mm with a stronger base plate so as to act as a bash plate, The plan is to put 20 12mm tubes thought the extension so as to increase surface area by about double and then push air through with a small thermo. The idea is to get away from tubes and plumbing and stuff. Protect the pan, add some oil and cool it were it sits.
This plan could falter at any point so I'll be playing it bit by bit.

With just the bonnet cooler and fan and the original cooler in front of the radiator. I have not seen a temp over 95c. That's on a nth qld mid day drive around town in traffic for an hour and a half so it's all good. Idling in drive will see the temp drop to just under 80c. The 15 min run to work early in the morning at 80 klm+ sees the needle just move off 50C.

The most expensive part of the transmission Pan upgrade is the 1/8 bspt tap, prices varied from $65.00 to $30.00. Not impressed I am. That makes the hole the most expensive 8.4mm on the jeep.

Took the XJ out for a run in the bush. Mainly low range hill climbs with mud hole etc. The trans temp went max to 95 Degree's C. Air Con was no good so the Aux fan was running continuously which definatley would have helped the trans. Max engine temp on the scan gauge was 96 Degree's C. I am quiet happy with the results compared to what I used to see with the Stock system.

so in keeping with my theory of "more & bigger is better" i added a second tranny cooler a few days ago along with a 10" 1000cfm electric fan in place of the stock auxiliary a/c fan (rated @ 485cfm from memory). used a B&M SuperCooler Alloy Stacked Plate 29,200 BTU unit (11"x11"x1.5") with a ProForm fan pulling from behind all mounted behind the rad. the fan is wired directly to the pcm and switches on at the stock setting (105* from memory). this is now the primary cooling unit with the Flexalite triple fan threat as the secondary. after a few days of driving in pretty warm weather, temps at higher speeds are only a bit cooler but the big difference is stationary and slow speeds (less than 40kph). temps are fully 30*F cooler and never got over 175*F (80*C). engine temps look to be about 3*C cooler on average. stationary tranny temps actually drop instead of holding or rising as before. so looks like it might be a winner finally however off-road and towing tests are still to come - its going to be near impossible to keep it under 190*F (88*C) in 35+ degree heat which was my initial goal.
