Default p0700 malfunction light on sometimes get stuck in limp mode 2nd gear

Help 2003 WG 2.7L CRD auto transmission for a few weeks would occasionally have the malfunction engine light come on only at start up then disappear after about 2 mins of driving & all seems normal. Ignored this, then got stuck in limp mode a few times would not go past 2nd gear, turn off and back on then would come out of limp mode and malfunction light go out a few minutes down the road. Took to dealer for repairs was stuck in limp mode at the time, they carried out module scan, cleared all DTC's stored, checked all levels and cleaned one plug. No DTC's returned and at $147 I thought I had got out of this one cheaply for once. Two days later back to the same had to drive back to the dealer to reset so I could get out of limp mode (disconnecting battery did not help) and drive home as its 4:30 pm fri afternoon. This time they tell me will cost $$$$ to diagnose, the scan is not returning anything significant could be solenoids etc:
Only seems to occur after vehicle has sat idle for long periods, in the morning or at the end of the day. Will drive fine all day if in use continually with short stops. Malfunction light sometimes comes up with ignition on and and vehicle not started. The code I bring up is P0700. Have looked at the various threads, my transfer case only seems to have one sensor not the input and output speed sensors talked about. Tried cleaning the plug for that, cannot find any other sensors around there so I presume I only have the one, may try changing if that is correct. Any suggestions appreciated.................

P0700 means there is a problem with the auto transmission control system. Nothing to do with the transfer case. The usual cause of transmission problems from what I read (and not too uncommon) is failed solenoid packs inside the transmission. I'm not sure if the symptoms are the same as you have. Remedy for solenoid failure is a replacement solenoid. They are within the transmission and accessed by removing the transmission oil pan. Just in case the dealers didn't do it get the transmission warmed up and check the hot fluid level to make sure that isn't the cause.

2003 WG P0700 descriptions...

P0700-TRANS CONTROL 1-2/4-5 SOLENOID CIRCUIT
P0700-TRANS CONTROL 2-3 SOLENOID CIRCUIT
P0700-TRANS CONTROL 3-4 SOLENOID CIRCUIT
P0700-TRANS CONTROL INTERNAL CONTROLLER
P0700-TRANS CONTROL MOD. PRESS SOLENOID CIRCUIT
P0700-TRANS CONTROL SHIFT PRESSURE SOLENOID CIRCUIT
P0700-TRANS CONTROL SOLENOID SUPPLY VOLTAGE
P0700-TRANS CONTROL TCC SOLENOID CIRCUIT

The dealer should do a road test to find out what is causing the code.

Did not check the oil as presumed the dealer did, will have a look. Does anyone in Adelaide know a good place where I could have my transmission checked...thanks

You will find that the CRD doesn't have a dip stick, while I can't help you with a good Auto bloke for Adelaide it does point to a dicky solenoid. I'd find a good auto tranny bloke to fix it, someone who does Benz's is a good choice will probably cost a few bob but cheaper than a dealer, and possibly a better job.
Main problem with autos when they break they cost heaps. If your lucky it may be the electrical coupling, they don't cost much but they do have to drop the sump to do it so you get a service at the same time.

I had a 2004 CRD that did the same thing on and off for months and finally while on holiday it started doing it a lot then while in Cooma light came on 1st gear limp mode could not reset got towed to Canberra(closest Jeep dealer) problem was the battery was on the way out and on start up computer picked up low voltage sent mesage to tranny to go limp mode(thats why 0700 code).

One new battery later problem solved,so maybe do a load test on battery and see if it's ok if not replace it.

Thanks guys, you right I could not find the dip stick for the transmission except for the one on the top left of the engine bay which I think is for the oil overflow. The comment about the battery may be on the money, have had to jump start my battery a couple of times in the past 3 months and only just last week re-charged it. I will try a new battery this week and keep you posted on the results... thanks again.

Mate I have my fingers crossed for you its the battery.. (pls let us know) Their may even be beer in it for drj33p if he is on the mony here!

I went down this road with the P0700 with the V8 545RFE tranny - Got out of it cheap with a new Torque Converter (<$1000 fitted)
I did have to wear my pants around my ankles like I always do when visiting the stealer. (I now have an independent Jeep mechanic that does all my Jeep work at atleast 1/2 the stealer costs and he is not a 17 yr old apprentice (in Coffs), and I don't feel like I have been violated by some snapperhead @ $135/hr.

Better that the 3 KJ's in the jeep stealership at the time all with blown motors from no water. Now their repair bill was I was told up near the $9-10k each (insurance & at a stealership) - Now thats JEEP'ing...
