Hahaha.
That's some funny shit
Anyway, my two bob on the 8 'v' crd...
I've got the 4.7. It's great fun.
But...
Personally, I'd like the diesel version for touring so much more.
Problem is, they are getting old, k's piled on. I'd get one, rebuild it myself (just did my diesel Vito 18mths ago, and as Layback said, won't part with it).
I'd only ever recommend some one get an older small capacity, high revving, turbo crd, if it was in mint low km condition, or they enjoyed working on them themselves. Because shit gets so expensive realllllll quick otherwise.
Edit. I forgot. I also have a 4.0 WJ. Thought about getting that back on the road, but it's a parts donor now.

As much as I like the 4BT (I used to own and work on a Case Backhoe with that engine), I'd rather spend the time getting everything from a WJ CRD into the new body.

Don't worry about it.
Welcome to the club.
I get 'brilliant' ideas all the time with an ending like you're experiencing
Are you good with spanners? Got spare time? If so keep an eye out for a really really good cheap one (I mean nearly free) with a non going motor.
Just beware, keep in mind the saying, "There's no such thing as a free boat."
Meaning even a free boat can easily end up being more expensive to rebuild than what a good condition version is to buy in the first place.

Thanks Hoobz, i could do it my self but have the room or the time. Now to decide what to do, i have a feeling the rattle is more then just rockers which means motor is fubared. I want to fix it as i love my WJ , but looking at cost it is almost just as cheap to buy a complete new car. Decisions Decisions......
