How much should it cost to to replace a diff solenoid?
I was out wheeling over the weekend and the rear diff on my '07 Rubicon took a long time to dis-engage. I took it to who I thought was a reputable Jeep mechanic and they say the solenoid needs replacing and quoted me... wait for it... $3000!!!! The mechanic said, yeah, he was shocked too.
Apparently it's $2500 for the part and approximately another $500 to fit it. They reckon the solenoid can't be replaced without replacing the entire "rear hemisphere", though he said he could do me a deal and replace it with a second hand unit for only $2500.
I'm kind of a bit taken aback and want to know if this is for real??
Anyone know if it really does cost $3000 to replace that solenoid. I'm kind of gob smacked.

Mate, seriously, I'd get a couple of other opinions....that sounds excessive.
If necessary, buy the parts in yourself from overseas.

Yeah, it "sounds excessive" but I wan't to know if it actually is.
Thing is I'm kind of in a bind which I fear the workshop might be leveraging. You see, I live interstate and will now need to fly home leaving the car at the workshop. Originally I was planning to drive it home with the diff locked and sought it out at home but called a few places to see if it could be done there. Before I even brought the car in they said "yup, sounds like a solenoid" and said they'll have it fixed in a day, then every day they keep saying it will take longer and at 5pm today hit me with the $3000 price saying they need an answer by morning.
I'm just kind of miffed that before I brought it in they said "that'll be a solenoid" and that they'll be able to fix it in a day and just now they say "yup it was a solenoid" and by the way it will cost ya three grand and will take a week to fix!!! I mean it's exactly what they expected but the cost and time has just blown way out of proportion. These guys claim to be Jeep specialists but can the really be as inept to think a $3000 job would be a simple fix or is it a kind of bait and switch situation? I mean, could it just be an honest mistake or am I being taken for a ride? I just don't know.

Wow... Just did some googling and same response from the US sites as well, as in only replaceable as a whole assembly. Damn ridiculous! Though if its locked on they should be able to manually flick the solenoid back to allow it to release.

Yeah, it did release after a time (though be it several hundred kilometers) and it actually had gone back to working fine by the time I dropped it off, though the workshop say it did stick again for them. While it was stuck I tried opening the fill hole in the diff to flip the selector ring with a screw driver but wasn't able to get it to throw. With the cover removed it looks easy enough to manipulate the selector ring but I couldn't manage it through the filler port. Unfortunately removing the cover requires draining the oil and re-filling, so it isn't really a practical solution.
I however came across a thread on another site that says Nissan use the same lockers and have the solenoid available as part number 384718s16A and say it lists for $105. The discussion is about a front locker rather than a rear locker but perhaps there is hope.
As I said I can't afford to delay my return any longer so it looks like I'll be leaving the car behind and probably won't be able to come back for her for some time, so well, at lease we can take our time sourcing parts

The car actually has a fairly good ARB compressor fitted already, so perhaps switching to a different locker is an option.
