Cooling system 'burper' installed.

G'day,here's some pics of the new cooling system 'burper' installed on the top hose in the Cherokee. As the top hose is higher than the radiator cap this allows me to get all the air out of the system.

It's a SAAS inline temp gauge housing unit from SuperCheap ($23), with a 1/8 bsp brass bung and a shortened 75 series Cruiser TD bottom hose as the adaptor piece.

Original top hose is retained,not cut. This is neccesary due to the main hose size being too small for the SAAS unit,with only the bellowed end fitting.

Works a treat,remove the bung and fill the radiator to the cap, start the engine, wait for the thermostat to open and reasonable heat of 90 or so, turn off engine, fill with coolant through bung until topped up (slowly to allow bubbles to escape) install bung with gas tape, DONE.

Very happy.

Interesting idea, that top hose must be running all round the world now if you didn't cut it????

Not to steer the thread elsewhere but I had no issues with mine and trapped air. I just waited for the thermostat to open and topped up accordingly. I don't believe I have ever had trapped air and I have changed my coolant three times. Not saying it doesn't happen as I have read other posts about the very topic. Maybe I have trapped air and don't know it??

I've been running one of these for a few years now, for the purpose intended and mine fit the hose. I cut it ans slotted the temp sender thingy straight in.
Never used it to burp the system though. Would work well I spose, albeit slow.
I've always burped mine the old fasioned way too without drama.
Although, I do raise the front of the car when filling/burping.

Had this idea myself, even got the in-line temp sender adapter, but never got around to it as it turns out air in the system isn't really a problem if you have a properly functioning system. The key is to never remove the radiator cap after the initial fill and burp. When the system heats up it will push out excess air through the valve in the cap, then when it cools it sucks coolant back in via the same valve.

Put a 'burper' on mine early on, but it dripped coolant onto the alternator and blew it up. Man said I'll do the warranty on the alternator if it happens again. x2 what Cypher said and I took it off.
