Default XJ 2.5L Diesel 2000 Model problems to date.

Hi Jeepers. Has anyone had experience with these models. I have a 2000 XJ (bought new) and am a happy JEEP owner, but i have had many trips to the service dept. To date I have 3rd radiator fan clutch, 3rd bonnet cable, 3rd instrument panel, suspect 2nd starter motor, due for 3rd rear main oil seal, 2nd eng temp sensor, 2nd indicator mechanism.
All of the work is being done under warranty, thankfully I extended the new car warranty and I have 2yrs left.

Any similar experiences, and what is the life expectancy of the VM Diesels, and what problems should I be aware of before warranty runs out???

Wow

There are plenty of stories around (here) about crap TDs. Its one of those models that have some golden children and some absolute shockers.
I seem to be lucky (now courting the touch of death) and have one of the good ones....only a few problems . Had the aircon compressor and evap fixed, and the glow plugs cark it all at once - go figure???
But other than that, i love it. The engine have a good reputation, its the Jeep bits stuck to it that cause the probs. My (ex) brother in law said that VM make engines for pumps and things and that they are some of the most reliable engines he's seen...as a fitter/mechanic out in the country.
Apparently the fan clutch is really common prob, but the other stuff u mention hasnt really turned up that much.

Sounds like you come across one of the problem children unfortunately. They a good truck otherwise !!!
Hope this helps.
Ian

Hi there Ears,

yeah the T/D has its problems but i still love it its a great 4wd.

so far i've had 4 new heads, new rockers and most of the top end redone back at 100,000km. the starter went bang not to long ago had that fixed what a pain in the ass to get out by the way lol,
aircon just went about 4 weeks ago so thats the next thing to fix when i can get it off the wife long enough fuel filter went same time as starter went i think that was because i was winding it over so much and it go bang crunch and then grind
also had radiator end cap throw a rubber seal. other then that the motor been good but i did think i blow it up not all that long ago at LCMP when it was on a hill and ready to roll over and the motor over ran when oil got in to the last piston i even had the key out in my hand and it was still reving it's head off but it seems fine now back to the beast it was lol

What happened on the hill????
You were on the way up (way waaaaay up?) and the oil ran back and up into the last cylinder? Wow! That must have been fun standing there listening to your donk revving like that!!! prob a bit hard in that situation to cut the air flow to stop it too. Isnt it good they can run on fuel AND oil !!??

Ears - apparently quite a few XJs that ended up in New Zulland are really crap, esp with the soft head prob that Kyro mentioned.
With a bit of luck it wont be long before you can get a snorkel for it......
Hows the rear suspension holding up? They tend to sag after not too long. And the lim slip diff wear out by or before 100 thou k's too.
