When towing the pop top around a month or so ago I filled up from empty with an ethanol blend and didn't notice any difference.

Toluene. That doesent suprise me. i use that as a solvent everyday at work to break down asphalt samples. It can be used as a fuel but it has no lubrication additives. So not real nice on the valves etc. Things would get a bit hot.

I have still got my tank of good fuel in the XJ and it hasnt stopped, nor hesitated once since filling up and adding the bottle of injector clean. I just find it funny that since owning the car it has never had any sort of issue like this. And as soon as i put $10 of E10 98 ron in it bareley had any power at all untill i filled the tank with premium unleaded with a bottle of wynns. Strange...

Digging up a bit of an old thread, but this has just happened to me...

I put in $20 of unleaded at Caltex Elsternwick last night just to get me home & now my XJ is running like piece of junk. No power, rough as guts & when I started it again this morning the yellow-orange engine warning light came on.

I've had my XJ from new in '01 & never had a problem. I thought instantly I had water in the fuel, but f it's an ethanol fuel issue then there's not much point putting metho in as it's 95% ethanol.

Well pissed off!

Thought I'd mention that I've been using nothing but Mobil 6000 for several years and found no probs ever.
Why? Mobilcard is my friend..

Uhm.... to my knowledge Caltex and Woolworths Caltex servos are yet to offer an E10% blend in Victoria and simply run unleaded. I'm pretty sure they only run E10 in NSW/ACT/QLD - even in these states it's hard to find.

Personally I almost exclusively run E10 (generally from Shell which is quoted 94ron or from United which is a quoted 95ron) and my TJ loves it. Runs clean and smooth with 0 hassles.

Caltex only have unleaded/premium, no advertised ethanol blend. But who knows what you're getting...

I have no idea if the crap I bought last night has water in it or mystery ethanol.

Earlier AJ CJ5 mentioned about ethanol having a different oxygen content. When I start the XJ the exhaust smells like an old car running on full choke, really rich & a lot of black cack on the driveway from the exhaust.

I'm no mechanic, but I know that when my 'check engine' light has come on in the past it's due to (1) a dodgy 02 sensor that needed replacing & (2) a mud caked 02 sensor. So is it possible that my engine doesn't like the 02 level in the ethanol & is causing the 02 sensor to freak out & run like a piece of sh!t? The 02 sensor is clean.

I'd love to think it was just water in the fuel & dump some methylated spirits into the tank, but if it's ethanol & I dump methylated spirits in it could get worse.

So how to get rid of 1/4 tank of fuel... Is there a drain plug on an '01 XJ? Siphon would be easy but the 1/2" tube hits something before it makes it far enough down into the tank...

Any help appreciated!
