Mainly size, was living in Sydney at the time and parking was cramped. Mate lent me a GU for a week and i found it too big and awkward, guess i just wasn't used to driving something that large. Tried a few brands but once i drove an XJ i was hooked. It's good on road and off and just big enough to be practical.

Size: Didn't need (or want) a full size wagon. Wanted a Diesel. Wanted something that felt reasonably like a car on the road, and was still reasonably capable off road. So I got the KJ. And the wife loved it as well.

Cause my TJ is purple and I'm brainwashed with the jeep movement.

Just for the sake of it, I'll compare my 1984 FSJ with my 2005 STS 4.2 diesel Pootrol.
Lighter? Just
Better Looking? Eye of the beholder maybe
Has history? Yep. Most of it involving zero maintenence and dodgy mods
Better off road? Nope. Pootrol will kill in in nearly every respect.
More comfortable? Pootrol better
Cheaper? Hmmm, $1800 vs $60k, maybe you're right there, but i'm sure there's a reason for it......
Better Fuel economy? What? old school 360 vs old school diesel?
More Fun to drive? Only cos your wondering all the time whats going to fall off or break.
Envy of many? I'd be sure more people are envious of the Patrol rather than the Jeep. Most laugh at the Jeep.
Appreciated by All? Nope greenies hate both.

You forgot reliability/ ease of servicing/parts availability and cost/space/functionality/ease of mods, all these other things go to the Nissan.

But i like the jeep. It has character which the patrol lacks and is cool to drive.
Bugger the fuel economy and all the mod cons.

My reason, Kick ass off road. Bit smaller and heaps more nimbble on trails, 400nm of grunt and 1500kms range out of 2 tanks!

Looks awesome, and you can fold the rear seat s down and have the flatest floor then any other factory 4b. Love the history with JEEP and contra to what most people think if you look after them and buy the right models they are extremly reliable...

4x4 MOPAR in short

Fair enough, but I'd probably get the opposite result if I compared my old MQ with my XJ. Should compare apples with apples, like an MQ with the FSJ or a late model Jeep with the 2005 Patrol.

Point taken though, you can't just compare all Jeeps with all Patrols or cruisers.
