Default Wheel bolts snapped off

I was driving and was very lucky not to have a serious accident on the great ocean road whenthe right front wheel studs on the kj snapped off with no indication just prior I pulled over ,sounded like motor or some problem but all was good and chugging like 2.8 diesel 2006 checked wheels and noticed 4of the five studs snapped I pulled off the road proper and had broken disc roto was running on side of the alloy wheel (original)
With all wheel bolts broken I very lucky not have a major accident .The day before checked wheels and tyres all well except adding air
What causes this ? Love some opinions......car had been serviced some6,000 k's earlier
Thanks in advance

Some one has over tightened them in the past. Probably when new tyres were fitted. Had you lost the RH front wheel, you probably would have had the car veer to the right into oncoming traffic. get yourself a cheap Aldi tension wrench next time they come on special & when wheels are put on do the nuts up to the correct tension. You probably need to do the other wheels to be safe now. Every 10,000km loosen the nuts on each wheel one at a time & retension them.

Yep, over tightening/stressing wheel studs is common, for example my new trailer wheel bolts had been over tightened and required a breaker bar to loosen when I checked them. They were checked because I just don't trust anyone to correctly torque them, keeping in mind that it's me who will have to undo them if I have a flat. Sad but true.

Thanks for responses ,over tight or loose ??? All other wheels were ok as I checked waiting for lift .....Makes you wonder how many different tensions exist on all car wheels and how often this occurs I often check the boat trailer never expected the car wheels .
