Default Whistling on low rev boost

I've noticed a whistling when accelerating from low revs - presumbably from the turbo starting to boost.

I think it might be from the giszmo between the air filter housing and wing. It has a part no. ~ 000 545 05 27 on the top. This farts away for a while when I turn the engine off.

The noise this device makes when you shutdown when normal so I wouldn't be concerned about this.

Can you take a recording of the noise? It may just be normal turbo whistle.

I rather think it is the normal turbo whistle. I've never had a diesel before so I don't know if they all do that. I've only noticed it now the engine is running quieter.

Is "the gizmo" something to do with the variable nozzle on the turbo? I'm guessing it's vacuum operated?

Yes. It's a solenoid valve that regulates the amount of vacuum to the turbo inlet vane actuator to control boost. On shutdown, it buzzes until it runs out of vacuum in the system.

Note the solenoid is identical to the one that operates the EGR valve, on the firewall to the left of the engine. To fault-find you can swap the two solenoids.

That's good to know. I might try swapping them over to see if there's any difference. Do they wear out?

Incidently, I have a 2001 MB SL320 which buzzes after shutdown. It's not as loud and doesn't buzz for so long but it's obviously a Merc thing.

I expect it'll be the same but give it a go and report back. They seem to be pretty reliable but either work or don't work, there doesn't seem to be much in between.
