Default New guy with questions

Hi there, great forum here. I am currently driving a 2001 td5 defender 130 double locked 3inch lift on 33 tyres. I have been considering getting a Wrangler for a while now and would like some first hand knowledge on this vehicle.

I am considering the new petrol engine as the diesel sounds as if it has problems and thinking of getting the auto.

I am interested in fuel figures for this configuration, and what effect a 3 to 4 inch lift with 33's has made. Can you run 33's on standard gearing.

How good is the traction control?
Should I just get the Rubicon?
My defender is very capable so thinking the sport with traction might not cut it with out spending money so may as well get the Rubi.

Thanks for your time,

Mark

I cannot comment on the lift and gearing as I have just brought mine but the traction control has been excellent in my experiences, places I thought a standard JK would struggle the traction control got me up and over it without much trouble and has made gravel road driving a heep safer. Very capable 4x4s standard

G'day Mark. Sounds like the defender would be pretty capable rig!!

At the end of the day it all depends on your budget, if you want a JK that is pretty much good to go and you can afford it, then the Rubi would be what you want. I could be wrong, but I think I read on a thread there is a 6 month wait though?

Not too sure if you have seen this thread, but it will answer your question regarding fuel economy:

All the best with it mate

The traction system in the JK is awesome, specifically the BLD which will get you through terrain that will stop a good LSD vehicle, however it has its limitations in sand but it can be over ridden. I have the rubicon and it is an absolute weapon off road and goes pretty much anywhere you point it. On the rubi I have35's on stock ratios and it is perfectly acceptable and usable

Hi Mark, I am also a Jeep Newbie, Ive had mine for about 4 months.
I used to race 4x4's all around AUS in Nissans & all sorts of prototype rigs But now I have relaxed to family trips & extreme touring. I was doing it all in my GU that had the works until the 3lt motor went bang, I now have a 4dr JK CRD sport (diesel),performance chipped & custom sports exhaust, it has a 2ish" lift & fat boy flares which give me enough space for the 35" tyres to travel. I have 4.88 diff gears & lockers (but the compressor isnt installed yet so I haven't used them) I have found the traction control to work nearly as good as lockers in times you need it, but it can be an anti fun device when your mucking around doing the likes of power slides or donuts ect (im going to have to find how to disconnect it for when I don't want it) I average around 15.6 ltrs per 100klm, & I have herd that the petrol's do much the same but have about twice the get up & go of a DSL.
as far as off road capabilities go they are reticulated. Brilliant approach & departure angles, 5 link rear (like patrols) but a 5 link front aswell, so they can flex out of this world esp if you have disconnects. they have a few week points that can be modified or replaced with stronger ones (IE diff housings).
its not the most piratical family car I have ever owned but she is the most fun & most capable next to my comp cars that I have ever owned.
You will get teased for buying a Jeep, but no more than owning a Landi (just the jealous Nissan & Toyota owners) Landi's are like pig dogs, only their owners will luv em, & yes I owned a Landi, & I still have the pig dog.
cheers piggy.

get the rubi, you will end up spending the money you saved on lockers anyway, might as well get it with lockers and sway bar disconnects from factory
