Well, my continuing mystery XJ problem has finally developed more into a much worse issue. The intermittent long crank prob is still the same but the mystery gassy odur has now become much, much worse. I thought it was a brake booster prob but it is now clear that i have a bad exhaust leak which is coming straight into the cabin area and making me unwell in about 5 minutes. I have checked all the exhaust I can get to myself and found nothing. Has anyone had this prob as well? Possible manifold leak or blocked cat maybe??

I've got a leaky manifold with a vented bonnet an you can smell it in the cabin with the cabin fan on anything but recycle - the intake is right at the bottom of the windscreen. That said you would hear it from the engine bay at idle..

Does it get worse with your cabin fan on recycle or 'forward'? Could possibly be leaky AC if worse on recycle (AC is on with recycle on with an update XJ, not sure about pre-update).

Have you checked your fuel hoses at the filler?

What does the gassy smell most smell like?

Also are there any obvious fluid leaks near the exhaust?

XJ spent the long weekend hooked to a trailer hauling green waste to the tip, according to the weighbridge the biggest load was 2.85t (car + trailer + green waste)...didn't skip a beat, temperature stayed in check, very pleased.

Spent the QLD long weekend flexing at Janowen Hills.

and one stage there I started losing brake pedal whilst trying to hold it still on a very steep decline. Dribbled some brake fluid and found the line into the Calliper a little loose.

fitted my new wheel bearings i got off ebay for $150 a pair, they seem like half decent bearings and weigh about 1kg more than the old bearings. will see how they go,
now just got to replace the front axle uni's and the king pin bushes or what ever they are called, i think that is why my uni joint flogged out.

did the bearings 15mins a side not bad timing
