Unhappy Purchased Modified JK - Engineering Cert?

Hey everyone,

New here... and somewhat new to Aus. I'm a yank. Moved from US to Australia 4yrs ago. Living in SA. Bought my first vehicle (a JK) from guy in Adelaide. Found it off of CarSales. It's a 2011 JK that was quite modded. Previous owner put on a Teraflex 3.5" lift kit with Fox 2.0 shockers and 33" mudders. Everything went smooth and I purchased the jeep. Have had it now for just over a year. In reinstating my insurance policy I asked the rep if they covers accessories, which was told they do. So, I begin rattling off what all I have and when I stated the lift kit the lady was about to cancel my damn policy! It was the first time that I had heard anything about the maximum height 2" law and whatnot. I stated that I wasn't exactly sure what I had and I would get back to them to confirm. Needless to say, I have been stressing since... as I don't want to get stuffed with a defect if I get in an accident nor have insurance not even cover me. So, doing some Googling, I found that it could be possible to make it road legal with an engineering cert (if they're willing to sign off on it). The previous owner never mentioned whether or not he had gotten such a thing done. I haven't found any engineering paperwork or plates in Jeep and can no longer get in touch with the previous owner. Is it searchable to check a VIN with an engineering cert? WTF should I do now? lol. Should I get the lift kit taken off before I get in touch with an engineer? I'm completely lost. Please help with your feedback. Cheers!

See an engineer and get it "engineered". Will cost you about $2k or so for testing and such

Been going through the same thing with my XJ. Take a look at VSB14 and NCOP 11 (national code of practice). The general rule of thumb is you can raise your roof height 2" (50mm) with a combination of lift and tyres without engineering. You can have a maximum of 2" larger tyre size than what is the largest maximum on your tyre placard.
Generally, if you go over the 2" higher roof height, you will need engineering approval for this, and it could involve a lane change test.

So, you can get all your mods approved, lift height and tyres etc..(if they are only 50mm bigger) but it can be expensive with the engineering approval and lane change. But then you will have piece of mind and full insurance.

Cheers,

Insure with Shannon's would be my advice. They're happy to insure modified vehicles.
