Can't give you advice on XJ but on Datsun Zeds the difference in cooling between a non vented bonnet and a vented one is allot. Factory vents are also angled to not allow air back in at speed.
The amount of heated they allow to escape the engine bay rather through the gearbox tunnel at stop is allow.

i used wrx vents turned around to suit the air flow on the bonnet kicked them back and then installed electric fan never overheated last summer and in winter you can watch the heat rise thru the vents

Awesome pics JJ ...

this is the one I had on my last XJ, dont reallly know how effective it was but in slow driving you can see the heat haze escaping, may have assisted pushing air in then out underneath, it was positioned on top of the intake/exhuast. will most likely do the same to my current XJ..

i really doubt a fan is of much value at speed , i remember when i was 19 i drove a ht panel van towing a trailer with a motorcycle on it from perth to bris , the panel van didn`t even have a fan , it never overheated once .
