Another downside is every time you open the door all the cold air falls out. Chest type is better.

Get a compressor fridge. Difference between the ebay ones at ~500 and the brand names ones at ~900+ are the compressor and insulation.

I have a mate with an ebay cheapies - consume twice as much power but has not broken (now a couple of years old). Brand name fridges use mainly Danfoss compressor or Engel which has their own compressor, both seem to be pretty reliable.

Waeco (Domestic) are now sold under several 4x4 brand names with subtle differences such as hinge mechanisms and all use the Danfoss compressor. ARB, Ironnan etc.

I got the ARB, clever detachable and robust hinge on the lid and it's orientation makes a world of difference to it's usability. Think about how you will mount (slide?) and maintain airflow (cooling) before you buy it, there isn't much room in a JK...

I,ve had an ALDI 35 lt 3way fridge since Jambo 08 and it is perfect for off road camping at only $300.It has magnets instead of dodgy plastic latches to hold the lid down but will freeze the milk if ur not carefull, tho it,s not a freezer.I bought a 55lt 3way fridge/freezer recently at Repco for $547 after my NRMA discount of %10 and it is just as good.It also has magnets on the lid,not plastic latches, neither of these need to be dead level to run on gas.Neither run perfect on 12 volt but that,s not what we need them for, turning them on for 24hrs beforehand is reccomended. The 35lt will go app 30 days on a 9kg bottle, the 55lt app 23.

i am about to score an ex caravan one for free and am going to experiment.

theoretically, all they need is a heat source to keep cool (read your chemistry text books).

first i am going to see how long they last on kero (with a wick, well these are based on the kero fridges of old). second experiment is attaching it to the hot water/heater circuit of the vehicle through hose/heat exchanger, how cool would that be? 0Amp draw?

Any higher and meats and drinks start freezing!!!
What about some of the other units they sell: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/40-Litre-...ht_13227wt_922

Says it has a Danfoss compressor.

What ever you do, do not run a 3 way on 240v through an inverter while you are driving. Way too dangerous, if a wire was damaged you could have a 240v live car & risk electrocution.
