Hey gmarsh, only just noticed this post but hopefully you have sorted. Let me know if not and happy to provide some points as this was a right PITA.
you need a long alan key that will fit between the edge of the intake and the actual outlet (bullhorn!) of the turbo. I am guessing the one closest to front of engine is the one your having issues with!

If you haven't already, i suggest removing the shroud/shelf at top back of engine bay as this makes accessing the back of the engine a whole lot easier. I didn't do this and took me hours to get everything out. Nearly kicked myself realising that I should have taken that shelf off and it isn't that difficult.

cheers

I'm starting to get the idea this is a common issue now.. is it affecting all WK diesels? I have a 2017 model with 87k and just wondering is it something I am going to have to face eventually? Is it better to take preventative measures before there is trouble? When? I'm still under warranty at the moment, but if I keep the car past 100k would it be a good idea to get the pesky hose replaced before it shits itself?
On a scale out of ten, how difficult is it for DIY? If 1/10 was too easy and 10/10 was too hard!

I'm at 104k and arranging to get it done for exactly that reason. Not a DIY job I'm comfortable with personally so a WK2 specialist will be doing it, at least I'll have some come back if ever needed.

Just had a call from a mate with a 2015 Grand, 150K km on clock, staying at another old work mate who last year his Grand bred the leak at 85K km and he did the job himself, ( local mechanic wasn't terribly interested ) so they took the lid off the 2015, all looked good but as they grabbed the hose it disintegrated in front of them, he also said the valley was full of grass seeds, dry enough to start a fire he reckoned............... so 2 vehicles differing in distance travelled but both not city hacks. So I'm thinking next week might ensure I get some little bits of hose and hose clamps ready to go...... and before I head off again on a trip I may just lift the top off and have a squiz and do the job on the hose at a time I choose, then do I just replace those other bastard hoses at the same time...........
Little voice says "You know you should" while the other one says "Crap, let someone else do it" but of course will they stuff it up, so its down to old trustworthy mechanic......... Who's getting too old for this crap, at least I don't have to crawl under the damn thing.....

One person should be okay to do it, over 2 days with lots of swearing ???????????????????? I have extra set of wheels just its a long drive if I need extra bits.... nothing special in the spanner dept, I have torx and speedies and big hammer.

It'll be an interesting exercise Drover, look forward to hearing the outcome if you have a go.

I'm still in the "crap, let someone else do it" mindset for this job, mine's finally booked in for tomorrow at 0830 to get all 4 "bastard hoses" done, including a silicone hose under the intake. The trusted mech will have it for 2 days, neither of us wants it rushed, it needs to be perfect. I know it will cost me but then I just think of what it could cost me if I don't get it done now, makes me shudder. And I get a guarantee on the work.

The final spur was witnessing that GC dump all it's coolant couple of weeks ago and seeing trailered off to who knows where while a desperate owner looked on. I'm putting value on peace of mind before I hitch up the van again.

So Drover, 4 bastard hoses?
Let's put them all in a nice list here mate.

I was chatting to old mate a while back at a Jeep meet and he was telling me his spanner bloke had warned him that his turbo water feed is swolen and he'd replace all the hoses in the rig for 1800 bills, which considering how much of a bitch just that 1 hose is, I thought that's a bloody bargain.

i will gather the bits then hopefully I will get inspired before I get to 'Gotta do It", always goes easier when I have the inspiration than when its a Gotta do it..... just not sure if I'll do all the hoses, I'll do a survey and see....
