Default Screw the VM....

As expected, never ending problems.

I installed new heads and big radiator. Never figured out why I had some intermittent bad idle some time ago, plus that it never did it for some time.
Went on a 2000 km trip, turbo blew 30 km from home, engine idle was horrible, blue smoke at idle...But at least it never overheated on the entire trip.
Changed the turbo and the idle problems continue. I've determined that the hydraulic tapped of cylinder #3 failed. HOW FUN IS THIS? After taking off the exhaust manifold to fit a new turbo, I'm going back all over again to take it off, take the heads off and replace the tappet.

Convince me not to put in a used tappet, sell the car and buy a WJ CRD...
Oh yeah, people report lower fuel consumption in the WJ, not to mention all the extra comfort. Not a whole deal faster than my XJ though.

Forgot to mention that the oil cooler failed at some point before the trip, so I replaced that too.
The warmest the oil was during the whole trip was somewhere around 210*F after all the cooling, when on a usual drive it stays around 180*F so I don't know if that accelerated my problems.

Yes, I thought about swapping my 2.5 TD with a 4.0 but I can't swallow the yearly tax which is $1700 for a 4.0, as opposed to $300 for a 2.5 TD.

Hmmm,
sounds like a post or 2 that should be in the rant thread.
Like no other jeep models have problems.
How old is this jeep?
How many Km has it done?
Yes you could get a CRD, all of them have some issues.
I cant understand this failed tappet. They tend to get a little noisy but thats it.
Disasters tend to occur in 3's whats the other one?

True, some posts should be in the rant thread
1996, 188.000 km
The past two days I've been reading about CRD issues, black death, failed oil coolers (interestingly I can't recall reading about it other than on this forum). And I've driven one yesterday, the owner regularly tows, beats the living life out of it offroad and it still runs great. He's owned quite a few VM's too.

I couldn't understand the lifter failure either. It made a ticking noise for the last 6 months. And on a few occasions it would run like it runs now but it only lasted 1-2 seconds. I posted about my problems:
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...d.php?t=131310

No clear diagnosis then, looks like it was a lifter.

New lifters, new head bolts, new head gasket, new pushrods and I would assume the valvetrain is good for another 50.000 km, at the very least. I'd throw around $400-500 at the car.

3rd disaster? I don't know, but I see a lot more blow-by than before the trip. Is it caused by the bad lifter? And I've seen a lot of oil coming from my rear main seal. Maybe that's the 3rd disaster

What's left to fail, engine-wise?
I'm eyeing up a new intercooler, with a better design (remember our discussions about boost / manifold pressure? the stock intercooler drops it by the amount we were fighting over). That would be taken care of.
Injection pump rebuild? Not extremely expensive but looks like nasty work to take off the cover. Or build the tool to hold the IP gear in place.
