Default Rubicon JL on 35s or 37s: what does it take

I'm from the US, but I was wondering what it takes for folks in AUS to put 35s or 37s on their Rubicons.

In the US, there really seems to be no limit. Just get the lift need to fit the tyre size you want. EVERYONE runs 35s or 37s on JKs. Since 35s basically fit with no lift and 37s will fit with a nice 2.5" lift, I'm wondering what AUS owners have to go through to put on the bigger tyres.

Is there a diameter increase you can do with no inspections? What is that limit?
If you go up to 37s, but is the process to get it road approved?

Most states in Australia limit you to a total 2" 50mm lift. This includes the bigger tyre.
So if you go 2" bigger diameter wheel thats 1" overall leaving only 1" for a lift.
However there are a number of companies that can engineer a bigger lift.
A lot of people just lift it and hope they dont get caught.
Probably going to be similar with the JL just released.

That is very interesting. Is there workaround other than do go too big and hope the police look the other way?

Are there any restrictions on bumpers or lights?

A few rules around bumpers. You'll get looked at if anything might damage pedestrians and things like mudflaps depending on where you live, stubby bars can be an issue.
Lights are pretty much anything goes as long as you don't turn them on, offroad only. A couple of extra driving lights or light bar not roof mounted connected to high beam are usually ok.

If you decide to go above the legal limits legally by having it engineered, it can get pretty expensive with track testing etc.

This is very informative. It will be interesting to see what happens with the new JL and JT. It is so easy to put 35s and 37s on them. They look stock on 35s and barely look modified with 37s.

You can get larger tyres engineered in some states. Typically this is not a cheap avenue especially if you have to go from scratch as it requires a swerve test, which requires you to hire out a test track. Cheapest option, in Victoria, is to go through a company that has already done it and engineer by copying the mods that were put on for the original engineered. For a JK this costs about $20k and does not require a swerve test.

For bumpers, you cant have anything protruding, so no stinger type bumpers. Requirement for full width seems to be a grey area of sorts, if you don't want to attract attention jsut go full width and have mudflaps.

For lights, headlights need to be adr or dot compliant. Pretty sure extra leds need to be connected via high beam, and need to not cause glare.
