Default Shorty Front Bumpers - Legal?

Are shorty front bumpers okay in Oz? I'm keen on the Rugged Ridge XHD

I've heard that.... but looking in the ADR's and at least Vic regulations i can't find anything that requires a full width bumper. Could it be an "urban myth" ?

Do you actually have a regulatory reference to it being illegal ?

It is illegal in QLD at least, Section LH (Page 132) of the of the Code of Practice of light vehicles specifically states full width front and rear bumpers.

Not sure how closely this is based on national standards.

It's a bit of a grey area - full width refers to the bumper needing to be the same width as the body of the car....however on a wrangler the wheels and flares are outside the width of the bodywork.

That is clealy not full width of the body, adding the ends would be though.
But the shackle mounts and non crash tested design would mean its offically not legal. Just cause a cop don't defect you doesn't make it legal.

You can get the Rugged Ridge bar from Ozadventure 4x4. Also if you buy the stubby with the webs you can have them on and off in minutes for offroading as needed. The RR XHD system is good and I have copied it a bit for my MOPAR stubby bar and will have the ability to have the webs on and off as needed.

Bullbar guidelines for WA:

http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/LBU_VS_CI_112.pdf

They don't mention anything about width, just about conformance with the shape of the vehicle.

Victoria's VSI 1 doesn't mention anything about width either.

It may be covered in ADRs relating to bumpers and trim, but I couldn't be arsed looking them up:
