Thats why ill never run one of these on any of my cars again.
I used to have one on my commodore(runs a supercharged injected v8 ) but the amount of shit that came out of the engine when it last had a rebuild has turned me off...2hp not worth it

tony - you will be losing power from that change you have done. Atleast in the airbox the intake charge is cooler due to it being enclosed, but with your setup it will be sucking in hot air (and you know how much heat these 4l's make !) and killing your power.

colder air intake = a denser intake charge = more oxygen = more power !

Agreed, my XJ would ping even with the standard airbox on a hot day or when working hard on the beach unless I ran Optimax. This was due to the increased temperature of the intake/engine. Once I put on a snorkel which was sucking in cold air from outside I never needed to run Optimax again to stop it pinging. Dont forget that the air in the engine bay has already passed through the radiator, at least the stock airbox trys to get it's air from next to radiator rather than after it has passed through it and heated up even more.

Cheers
Steve

aha, (just saw da vinci code) Penny has dropped! you have solved a puzzle i've had for some time. A few months ago i had to use crap fuel (in the bush - no optimax which is my regular fuel) and I got no pinging (but really bad fuel consumption). Its probably the first time ive used regular UL since Ive had the snorkel fitted.

I realise the intake charge is now haot but for me it was a means to an end a second battery is required and my car is a 7 seater so no room in the back the airbox had to go. but saying that the is a noticeable differance in bottom end power an acceleration my jeep is also not a daily driver does about 5k per year so the filteration is a risk I am prepared to take my long term plan is to fit a snorkel an a prefilter where do others fit second batteries in there already crowed engine bays I still need to move the waser bottle to fit onboard air

even with my setup every time ive driven it the hot ait hasnt affected it one bit... ive noticed it actually cooler than it would have been before. i have also got low down power increase aswell as midrange. i havnt really tested the top end as i havnt been on a straight enough and not watched by cops one yet.

guys, seriously, even if these setups are making power, you wont feel it thats forsure. Its like going from a BA falcon (180~kw) to a BF falcon (190~kw); the extra power / torque is there but you dont notice it.

Forced induction cars will make the power, but again its not something that you will really notice - ive had two forced induction cars running more boost

this is just another myth. You will hear more suction and have a snappier throttle but thats really about it
