So I have a transmission cooler that I bought ages ago and have finally thought about mounting it. My thought is to mount it in my bullbar and remove the stock cooler and replace it with this, added bonus of no cooler in front of the radiator.

Anyway, I'm thinking of making a removable section in the bottom of the bar and mount the cooler to this with a fan or two on the back of it, it will be in the section under the winch plate and above the sloped base. Does it sound like a good plan? I was concerned about mud etc but it should be easy to remove and clean if required.

Here's a pic of the jeep so you can see the bar, the sloped section underneath is where I would make the removable section along with slotting it for air flow.

Cheers
Steve

im thinking fans are good idea but until a gauge is mounted to find it out if its too much cooling effect...well, ya might be jumping ahead.. fans might not be necessary (same boat im in - just waiting to fit a gauge up and see where the temp sits).

also, i the angle of your bar looks a bit too sloped to draw air in. might need some ducting to help things (again, same boat as im in).

guess you just need to fit it and see what temps read then give it the extras to make it work

The slope was the main reason for thinking of running a fan or two, I'd get very little airflow otherwise at slow speed. I just went back through the thread and see yours has the cooler mounted upright, mine would have to be mounted at the same angle as the bottom of the bar, at least a shroud would be fairly straight forward.

Cheers
Steve

yeah, i think a fan would help in that case Steve...was waiting to see my temps to decide if i needed one myself as only half the cooler is directly exposed...but so far so good (at least the tranny hasnt blown)

whats wrong with it? 80° is pretty fine- at least to mil specs. Don't forget: too cold does also increase wear. 80° is "the operating temperature"

Good- no, excellent work- Rodgebone!

Hope it works as good as it looks rodge ....

Im with the others regards your temps under those conditions ....

Hows your your normal driving temps by comparison. ???

Gotta remember too ..... radiators and oil coolers are heat exchangers ... not refridgerators.

The hotter stuff goes in ... the hotter it comes out .... but at a percentage lowered, cooled temp, compared to the inlet temp.

Thanks people... I was worried because the temp is after the cooler. But if thats ok, well, I'll just keep an eye on things for the time being.

id take the temp readings from the tranny output before it goes into the cooler - that you know the max (measurable) temp in the trans. not totally accurate but probably the best readings you will get unless you tap the sensor into the pan itself.
