Default WK2 Diesel - Engine Oil Capacity

Seems to be some conflicting info published as to the oil capacity of the V6 VM Motori diesel. My owners manual states 8.4 liters and some other sources say 7.6 liters. I just did an oil and filter change on mine and put in just shy of 8 liters and I reckon it's a tad high on the dipstick. And yeah I know this motor takes a while to drain, warmed up properly and given plenty of time to do that. How much have your engines taken after an oil change?

I let mine drain overnight and put in 8 litres which was a tad over also. Figure it would end up in the catchcan so didn't bother to drain and measure how much it was over. My manual says 8.4l also in MY15

The MY 14 changed to 7.7 litres (8 quarts) previously 2011-2013 same engine was 8.4 litres (9 quarts). Not sure if there were any changes to the engine sump or they just recalibrated dipstick. Min is a early MY14 Build August 13 after adding 7.7 litres it is always below max on the dipstick. Leaving it overnight always produces a slightly higher reading than the recommended 15 minute wait after engine stopped.

They say it is 1.6litres from min to max on the MY14.

There was a earlier post about warning of overfilling or running with the oil level
on the full mark, causing DPF problems, if you read through, I think it is better to
have the oil just under full,

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...t=level&page=2

Unless I misread the posting ... which does happen when you get old...

Yeah I've read that thread mate, to me it reads like a comedy of errors where the Jeep stealerships were clutching at straws because they actually had NFI on why the DPF issues were occurring. With the benefit of hindsight, the issues were in fact software related and have since been sorted with updates. The DPF captures burnt diesel fuel particles as it exits the exhaust, engine oil plays very little part in this as the only source of engine oil in the exhaust would be crankase fumes fed into the intake by the CCV system. The main issue you can run into with an overfilled sump is aeration of the oil if the level is high enough that moving parts like the conrod counterweights are whipping up the oil. IMO you would have to have around 1.5 to 2l overfill.
