Default ZJ Alternator for TJ - Anybody done it?

Well I did just before my big trip and maybe that was the mistake - not enough time to really check it out. Was told that it is a straight swap from old (90 amps) to new ZJ one (136 amps) - saw also a thread about that on the forum somewhere.

One day after I did it the Voltmeter and my battery monitor (for both batteries) showed overcharging up to 19V.

Today after 2.5 weeks and driving stupid 650 k's from Broken Hill to Tibooburra and back for an alternator change I finally went back to the old one and problem fixed - hopefully will find out more during the next few days up to Birdsville.

According to Western Auto at Broken Hill the external regulator used was too small for the ZJ alternator even that the original TJ one is regulated by ECU and internal regulator. I am not an Auto Electrician, so no idea.

I am not sure if that was the reason for the overcharging, because this is story number #320 I got about that ongoing issue. Anyway. it is fixed now, but would be interested if anybody has successfully installed the larger alternator in a TJ MY99, because I kept it and maybe it does go back if I really know how to do it.

Cheers Oli
