The o-ring kit isn't for the oil filter mating surface, AFAIK. Well, I just put in such a kit and there was none left for that anyway. the large-diameter o-ring is for the adaptor where it attaches to the block. THere is no groove on the adaptor where the oil filter gasket seal meets it.
