Default TJ rear diff

Looks like the rear diff in my 97 TJ manual is about to lunch it. Sounds ok but a quick inspection for something unrelated revealed couple of missing teeth on spider gears and a hairline crack in the crown wheel.
Considering replacement with second hand parts or a complete re gear with f&r lockers.
Info on second hand parts and comments on lockers and ratios would be appreciated.

Fitting a locker will resolve your bad spider gears but the crown and pinion will also need replacement and likely all the bearings as the oil will have been contaminated with metal.
This will cost a bit of brass even if you buy the parts and do the work yourself.
A good secondhand axle may be a cheaper solution but how do you know it also hasn't been tortured before you get it.
You may want to consider an upgraded rear.

Isn't someone on this site selling TJ axles at the moment?

Everyone has there own preferences for lockers, there is lots of debate elsewhere on this site about the perceived pros and cons of the various lockers on the market, just search amongst the grand cherokees forums etc.

I have used ARB air locker for years in a toyota hilux 1.25T tray/ tipper that regularly in the wet months has to haul up tracks at its gross payload and these tracks can range from greasy mud to a sticky quagmire and it always gets the job done with no fuss.

US exchange rate is not too bad at the moment, plenty of good deals over there. Got some parts the other day 9 days from order to delivery. I would rebuild it, that way you know what you have got. Depending on the age and condition of a second hand diff, you would more than likely need at a minimum a rebuild kit to fit a locker anyway. Generally don't need a rebuild kit if you fit a Lockrite, all the others are major work.
