Default XJ's really a 4x4

I'm a bit puzzled how the basic XJ gets labeled a 4x4!
And this label also effects insurance categories as well!
Isn't it just an all wheel drive stock?

Stock it is a selectable 4WD just like Early Landcruisers, Patrols and others. Although it does have the ability to be driven like an AWD which makes it better but I’m not telling you anything there.

???? There is NO diff lock!
FRONT OR BACK!
NO hubs to lock in!
LSD in the rear at best!
That ain't a 4x4!
Just an all wheel drive!
With a selectable low range on some!
If I fit an auto locker in! .....
It's really a 3wd!

Any factory fitted LSD in this situation will allow this to turn easily! And has nothing to do with the transfer box at all!
Two totally different components of drive line, and really have nothing to do with each other.
Land cruisers had manuel locking hubs for donkey years. And prados have had low range and diff locks in the 90's.
What makes you think a stock XJ is a true stock 4x4?

You’ve basically just described an 80 series landcruiser - although they didn’t have LSD. Love to see a Toyota diehard’s face explode when you tell them their beloved Cruiser is just an AWD!
