Default Problem engaging 4WD???

Gidday all,

I have been used to a Land Cruiser FJ60 transfer case - when you move the lever to 4WD-H or 4WD-L, you can feel the thing engage and the 4WD indicator light on the dash comes on immediately.

I have not used the XJ off-road yet (though I can feel a trip to Double Island Point coming on), but I have tried out 4WD on a patch of gravel road. It works very differently from the old Cruiser. The lever moves OK, but it doesn't have the same "positive feel". The indicators for part-time and full-time 4WD do not come on immediately. I have to drive forward or back for several metres before that happens. The same applies when I disengage.

Is this normal?

Mike

When you engage low range part time 4 wheel drive you should have the vehicle just rolling with tranny in Neutral and it will slip in and out like oil through a hole. and no you not normally feel the transfere case engage / dissengage.
The dash light illumination is an electronic one and easiest way to get light out if it does not go out or come on is to drive forward and blip the throttle (the light does not affect the state of the transfere case)

As above, make sure you are rolling in neutral when shifting.

Is it ok to shift it at a crawl in drive??? mine got stuck in part time 4x4 on saturday after doing some 4wding (i got bogged up to the doors in her..... came out real easy though) and afterwards I found mine was going into 4wd better if i was in drive but like crawling at idle. Mind you, Sunday I changed the transfer case oil and although the colour was blood red, there wasnt alot of it and no obvious leaks and now its much nicer going in and out of 4wd.

hi...i'm a 4wd newbie.
so just to confirm, if i'm switching to or from 2WD, i always do this in Neutral and rolling?

I have always done it stationery in drive, moved a little, reversed a little, then back into drive.

can anyone just confirm please?

i know...silly question but i'm a newbie.
