Default snorkel tube size?

So im looking at makeing my own snorkel out of some pvc pipeing and a couple of silicon elbows as to buy 1 for my td is well out of my budget! now i've been to bunnings and i can get 40mm or 80mm tube.... would the 40mm be to restrictive? has anyone else made their own snorkel? whats the diameter of a bought snorkel?

40mm would be way too small, my airflow snorkel on my petrol requires a 76mm hole.....
