Welcome to the club Gam.
A few of us are still running the XJ's and loving them.

Mine is purring like a kitten and i'm not touching it after 12 years of upgrades.
Will be great to see what plans you have for Hamish's old XJ. Already looks great.

Cheers,

Speaking of rust, I found when I went over mine with a fine tooth comb, rust popping out in welds where slag was left behind. Get it early enough and you can clean it back to bare metal and spray. Leave it too long, bigger problem.

Welcome to another '96er

The 1996 model is unique to that year, being a crossover

They contain post & pre-update parts, and some unique ones as well

If you ever get the chance to rat out a wrecked '96, take them

Thanks for welcome y'all. I have certainly fell for the look of the XJ. It has really grown on me and the kids. The car is certainly purring now after the injector upgrade.

I really want to give the car an open or closed door respray to get the exterior looking mint and will do this myself with the help of family who have a body shop. I have a set of Bilstein 5100's on their way and a new set of rear OME leafs. Will do 'the cure' to delete the vagueness from steering as well. Then just chip away at refreshing other bits and pieces.

Hamish is still driving his Renault Clio. Btw we share the same Renault passion as i have a number of Renault Clio in the household garage. I guess there is a deep engrained DNA relationship to Renault because of the AMC partnership to initially fund the XJ development.

Project XJ has had lots of TLC.**

Had a leaky exhaust so had the leak fix and the flange removed and more clearance under the carriage.

From this:

and this:

to this and no more leaks:

Decided that the engine bay needed a spruce up so pulled old bits off, sanded them back and coated black again:

Swapped to a genuine oil cap as well:

Installed a new bosch fuel pump just as a precaution:

Decided i wanted to respray the rear fuel tank cover and tow bar to jet black, so sanded them back and then applied Bill Hirsch Miracle Paint rust encapsulator.**

They were like this:

Didn't like having the old spark plug leads and read that the NGK ones are fantastic so installed them:

Swapped out the old coolant overflow reservoir as it looks crusty:

The engine bay was like this:

Now its like this:

And another angle:

Had to sort out the front upper and lower control arms to pass club plate check:

So picked up a set of these:

Changed out all the bushing whilst there, and thank you Mr air hammer!

New vs Old control arms:

Oh yeah baby:

Thanks to @Hamish for helping me procure some new Bilstein 5100's:

and new rear leafs:

Help fit them up**too!

Then added new EBC green stuff pads:

My XJ is now driving like a boss, so happy with it, such an awesome go anywhere machine!
