The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is one of the most important engine management sensors in a Jeep Cherokee. I would ask the mechanic what he thinks happens when unmetered air that is not detected by the PCM enters the combustion process
If the crack is big enough, the engine may not be able to enrichen enough
If that was the case, you would expect poor fuel consumption
