Default Oil in coolant bottle

So found out today there is oil in the coolant surge tank. Leading me to think my kj crd has a cracked head and/or gasket. Can't get it in to a mechanic before christmas. Just wondering if there is any other likely cause of oil to get in the coolant bottle other than cracked head/gasket? Exhaust is clean, engine not overheating but sounds very rough. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Look under the oil fill cap on the engine, the yellow one. Is there any bubbly deposit in there? How does the oil look, is it milky in appearance and what level? Are you losing coolant from the bottle?
Do you know how to do the head gasket test? When cold, remove the coolant tank cap to release any pressure, replace cap and start the engine, allow to run for sixty second and turn it off. Rmove coolant tank cap again - if there is pressure build up during that short run it is likely the head or gasket is the problem.
If you do have oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil then don't drive it, you'll just make the repair more expensive.

here is one that sometimes skips our minds : over the years I have come across this : WOMEN not all but there can be a few that think water is oil and fuel is oil and oil is what goes into everything including filling up a engine to the top of oil filler .
LOL . flush it , heat it up fully and pull the plugs out , see which one leaks check oil color after heating up .

if the filler dip stick shows more , or same for coolant , you then will know.

Not sure how the VM motors are configured, I have seen a Volkswagen Transporter that had corrosion behind water pump which leaked oil into the water so it is not always the head this was the alloy casing in front of the block.

They do have a mechanically driven water pump not belt.

All I am saying is check first there are other possibilities - I have no knowledge of the VM engines but being European you never know.

The water pump is driven by the timing belt and this drive is external.
Do not pull the glow plugs - the only kind this engine has.
He mentioned that it's a CRD he is talking about. Please, if you don't know this engine don't offer advice, its the worst thing you can do.
