Default JK CRD won't start but runs fine :)

Hi,

First time on the forum.

I have a JK 2.8L CRD 2007

Recently had an issue with quite a bit of water in my fuel. Had error PO88 and car stalled. Drained tank and rinsed it several times

Changed fuel filter and now have clean fuel again. Also gave it an oil and filter change.

The car currently will only start using aerostart (only requires about 1/2 second spray) and off it goes.

The car has been like this for 3 weeks now, runs smoothly all day. Have driven it on freeway and over 1000km since problem and it is very reliable. I can't emphasise this enough.

But it will NEVER start without aerostart

If anyone has any ideas that would be great I have attached 2 images from my Bluetooth OBD sensor. One is from a failed start and one is from an "aerostart" start

Any help would be appreciated, mainly concerned that I might need a new high pressure pump

Darrell

Glowplugs working properly? I could see a CRD running ok but not starting if they were not working.

Most of these later high-compression common rail diesel engines don't use the glow plugs for start-up unless the ambient temperature is below 10 degrees so I can't see that being the issue, although I agree with your train of thought.

It is a weird one. Could it be a faulty rail pressure sensor? Given you've only got 10% on a failed start compared to an assisted start?

I'm pretty sure the fuel rail pressure needs to be 2000PSI before the injectors will fire a fuel charge. Your unassisted start is clearly not hitting that point. I would suggest that the arostart is triggering a combustion event in a few cylinders, which in turn is causing the crank to rotate faster, which in turn is causing the injector pump to rotate faster thus producing the pressure required to initiate the fuel injectors.

So my thoughts are your injector pump is damaged from the water. What is the max rail pressure you can obtain when the engine is loaded up? Should be 23,000PSI for a pre 2012, 30,000PSI post (I think).

Just a theory anyway.
