winch issue
I,m after some advice .
my Cj7 has a 9000 lb Max-T winch .
The Jeep is running a Holden 308 V8 with a standard alternator and a 460 cca battery .
when I use the winch the engine dies (seem to be losing electics .)
Is my battery too small ,my alternator too small or is there another issue that I have .
I am about to install a Baintech 100 amp duel battery system ,should the winch run off the main or aux battery .
Cheers

Most winches require a minimum of a 700cca battery.

Mine listed min 650 and the stock battery was 600 but it still worked OK. I have since replaced it with an 800CCA battery and no probs at all now!
With the small capacity battery it is not able to supply the current required and is pulling the voltage down low. At idle the alternator is not putting out a lot of current either and the engine stalling will be caused most likely by the battery voltage dropping to low to continue running the electrics required for the engine to run. In addition the excess load with make the alternator work extra hard meaning its a lot harder to spin it which puts an extra load on the motor at low revs and will be helping to stall it.
Running winch of which battery will depend on your dual battery system. If its a DC to DC charge system with no ability to connect directly to the alternator then I would not, as it will run the second battery down rapidly with a slow recharge. If it has the option to connect the batteries together with high current cables (like for starting assistance from the second battery) then this may over come that problem, but bear in mind the cables would need to at least as thick as the winch cables and any switch to join them together will need to be rated accordingly (in the vacinity of 500 amps).

I would run your winch off the main cranking battery. But a minimum of 750cc.

is this the jeep that stalls on hills brian? the one that was on lpg?
try increasing the batt cca first, make sure all cabling is sized correctly, run winch off the main batt, get a hand throttle to up the idle during winching, some of those old alternators wont do much under 1,500rpm

By yourself an Optima 800cca battery. You can get them off ebay for around $145 delivered. That will be more than enough.

You answered your own questions.
your battery is too small & so is your alternator.
Others have given plenty of advice on batteries, your alt needs to be at least 120 amp.
