Full Time 4WD helping Dana 35 rear
Hi All,
Just looking for some advice on using full time 4wd with large tyres on to help take some strain off the dana 35 rear diff.
The only reason i ask is that after whacking some large 31's on my XJ it seems to straining a little more than with the 29's.
So yeah, is it okay to run the car in full time 4wd constantly?
//This is only when I have the 31's on. For everyday driving I run 29's.
Cheers

So the 31's are for offroad, if so run it in 4WD offroad anyway, for the road stuff just leave it on 2WD even with the 31's on. Shock loading is what kills the D35, and the housing flexing, if it's getting loads like this you should be in 4WD anyway.
Cheers
Steve

It's straining more with 31's due to the gearing being setup for standard. Think of it like using a spanner, holding it from the end (standard tyres) requires less effort than holding it from the centre (larger tyres).
I used to use full time when I had stock tyres on in the wet as the back had a tendency to let go otherwise. With the Lokka in front I'm basically excluded from being able to use it on the road any more, but we tow a horse float up to 2t with 30s in RWD without any problems.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Yeah I'd just heard so many bad stories about the Dana35s thought it might be good just to take a bit of strain off the rear axle.
Also quickly, is it true you can't go above a 31" tyre with the Dana35?

I ran 32's (and still do but on a D44) for 3 years on my D35, I only totally destroyed it (busted axle, busted teeth on side gears and damaged ring gear) the once Bear in mind this was a stock D35, they can be built up to be stronger but if you're going to do that it's probably worth starting with something stronger in the first place.
Cheers
Steve

i had 31,s for years with stock gearing, and at 380,000k,s i swapped it out only cause it sounded like a growly old dog, i found running in full time 4wd just guzzled more fuel
and dropped the performance
